Does coffee make sex better?
While it’s infinitely more fun and exciting to talk about aphrodisiacs like ginger, dark chocolate, strawberries, figs, or oysters, I want to talk about something that’s more likely to be a regular part of your routine and isn’t season-dependent.
A couple of months ago, people on TikTok and Reels talked about how coffee made their org*sms more intense and twice as long.
With one TikTok user claiming that coffee improves orgasms “by 50 percent” and another reporting her own observations after having s*x on 3 shots of espresso, several other users came out with their own stories of experiencing better arousal and stronger Os on coffee.
Soon enough, doctors began to chime in with their own thoughts on how this may hold true.
Claims made
- Coffee opens up your blood vessels and improves circulation
- Coffee increases sensitivity and improves arousal
- Caffeinated orgasms last longer than non-caffeinated ones
What we know so far
While most of the stories around caffeinated s*x seem to come from genuine users who may not have had any agenda besides partaking in a trending conversation, there hasn’t been enough research on human subjects to verify this claim.
Referencing a 2005 study from Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behaviour, Dr Karan Rajan stated that caffeine made rats engage in sexual play more often but the study was not extended beyond those subjects to analyse if the same can be seen in humans.
With an increase in heart rate and alertness, it is possible that people feel more energised and mentally present for s*x, making it easier for them to get in the mood.
Another study from the University of Texas noted that men above the age of 20 who drank 2-3 cups of coffee per day were less likely to experience erectile dysfunction than men who did not drink coffee at all.
These observations are important and useful but not enough to determine whether coffee singlehandedly makes org*sms better.
The rebuttals
As this dialogue grew, many were also quick to challenge and refute these claims. Many claimed that coffee made them want to immediately use the toilet, which wasn’t an exciting or arousing feeling right before sex at all.
My own experience
While I haven’t personally seen a difference in my orgasms when I’m caffeinated vs. when I’m not, I definitely have seen an exciting effect after taking pre-workout.
Maybe the caffeine levels in pre-workout mixes worked better than the lower dose of caffeine in my usual fresh brew. Or maybe it was just from the fact that I typically take pre-workout in phases of my life when I am more active and ready to hit the gym.
I’m usually already in a good mood and feeling motivated or driven when I take that pre-workout and my libido is mostly strong on days when I feel that confidence anyway.
Is it fair to then say that caffeine made sex better for me and could do the same for you?
Maybe not. I simply don’t have that kind of data for you.
But there’s no harm in testing this theory out yourself and experimenting with what works for you in bed. Maybe you can stop waiting for strawberry season and make every day feel like a sexy one.
